Chase Smith is the Activities Director at Jaywalker, where he brings his passion for the outdoors and dedication to recovery into every activity he plans. Chase curates engaging, adventure-based experiences that promote personal growth, teamwork, and a deep connection to nature. With an understanding of the therapeutic power of outdoor activities, he designs programs that challenge and inspire clients, helping them build confidence, resilience, and camaraderie on their journey to recovery. His hands-on approach and infectious enthusiasm create a supportive environment that encourages clients to push their limits and discover new strengths. Chase’s commitment to holistic recovery through active engagement makes him an invaluable part of the Jaywalker team, where he empowers clients to embrace both recovery and adventure.
Dr. Arshad William, MD, is a highly respected psychiatrist at Jaywalker with extensive expertise in addiction medicine and behavioral health. Dr. William earned his medical degree from the University of Benin in Nigeria and completed his psychiatry residency at Harlem Hospital, affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He is Board Certified by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). As a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the Colorado Psychiatric Society, Dr. William is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals and families affected by mental health and addiction issues. His experience and dedication make him a valued member of the Jaywalker team, where he brings his skills and insight to support clients on their journey to recovery.
Dennis Ballinger is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Addictions Specialist in Colorado. He is a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and an Approved Supervisor and Approved Supervisor of Supervision through AAMFT.
Dennis has over 25 years of experience providing counseling to individuals, couples, and families who are struggling with co-occurring disorders. He has been trained and certified in a number of evidence-based practices, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Functional Family Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Hypnosis for the treatment of Trauma, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, among others.
Dennis has trained over 50 individuals working towards their master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and has been a consultant to hundreds of therapists, case workers, and other professionals. He has presented to professionals and community members throughout Colorado and the nation on issues related to co-occurring disorder treatment, family therapy, trauma, and attachment disorders.
Dennis lives with his wife in Glenwood Springs and enjoys all the Roaring Fork Valley has to offer in terms of outdoor lifestyle.
Kevin Petersen, MA, LMFT, brings over 30 years of experience in supporting families affected by addiction. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and a recognized family addiction professional, he is passionately committed to healing family systems. Kevin is also the renowned author of “Chronic Hope: Parenting the Addicted Child.”
In 2020, after decades of assisting families in his private practice, Kevin founded the Chronic Hope Institute to help families overwhelmed by a loved one’s addiction. His clear and concise action plans for family addiction coaching have earned him the trust of thousands of industry professionals, clients, and their loved ones.
In his role at Jaywalker, Kevin serves as a dedicated family advocate responsible for all aspects of our Family Program, including programming and systems management. His responsibilities encompass a broad range of tasks aimed at supporting the families of our primary care clients. Kevin develops individualized family treatment plans tailored to each family’s unique needs, strengths, and recovery goals. He hosts a weekly family Zoom group meeting to provide ongoing support, education, and guidance, and conducts weekly individual family coaching sessions to address specific family dynamics and promote recovery. Additionally, he facilitates our onsite family programs, ensuring they are comprehensive and effective in supporting family recovery. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, Kevin participates in weekly clinical staffing meetings, providing valuable input and recommendations on client care. He also undertakes other responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Clinical Officer to support the overall effectiveness of our Family Program.
Kevin’s extensive experience and unwavering commitment to family recovery will be instrumental in enhancing the support and resources available to Jaywalker families, ensuring they are fully integrated into the recovery process of their loved ones.
Jason Propp, better known as “Jay,” has spent most of his adult life in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he graduated with a BS from Colorado State University. He embarked on a career as a Software Engineer, which he pursued for seven years before facing significant personal challenges with both alcoholism and drug addiction at the age of 30. His life reached a turning point at Jaywalker Lodge, the first and only rehabilitation program he attended, which he credits with saving his life and helping him find purpose and meaning.
Embracing his experience at Jaywalker and engaging in a twelve-step program with a desperation to live, Jay discovered a new life of happiness, joy, and freedom. This personal rebirth ignited a passion in him to assist others struggling with alcoholism and addiction. Today, Jay is a fervent advocate for recovery, inspired daily by the successes he witnesses within the program. He is firmly committed to helping others find the light in the darkness of addiction, truly believing in the possibility of recovery for everyone.
Aaron Garland’s journey through life has been as diverse as it has been enriching. Following his graduation from Brandeis University with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology in 1980, Aaron embarked on a series of adventures that shaped his eclectic career path. From playing basketball for a kibbutz team in the Israeli national league to working as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch in Boston, MA, Aaron’s early experiences laid the foundation for his unconventional yet fulfilling career trajectory.
Transitioning to Cape Cod, Aaron spent five years transforming his family’s farm into an equestrian center, showcasing his knack for innovation and entrepreneurship. Subsequent endeavors saw him building homes in the Pacific Northwest and exploring his passion for acting in Los Angeles, where he earned his SAG card while tending bar and auditioning for roles.
Seeking new horizons, Aaron spent two years volunteering on a non-profit farm in Alaska, nurturing musk oxen and revitalizing family-owned agricultural ventures. This chapter ultimately led him to settle in Colorado, where he dedicated two decades to educating and empowering youth as a high school English teacher. During his tenure, Aaron served as the educational director at the Youth Recovery Center at Valley View Hospital, where he played a pivotal role in supporting teens on their path to recovery.
In 2018, Aaron transitioned into full-time work as a life coach for teens and young adults, specializing in executive function skills. For the past 3 1/2 years, he has also served as a life/career coach and executive skills mentor for several hundred clients at Jaywalker Solutions, further demonstrating his commitment to guiding individuals towards personal and professional success. Aaron’s diverse background, coupled with his unwavering dedication to helping others, makes him a valuable asset to both his clients
Kim Nuzzo brings over three decades of experience in the addiction treatment field, with a focus on assisting both addicts and their families. For the past eight years, Kim has honed his expertise in treating sexual addiction, specializing in areas such as internet pornography, sexual compulsivity, intimacy anorexia, and infidelity. Kim’s approach centers on collaborating with clients to identify personalized paths to healing that align with their individual needs and circumstances. In recognition of his dedication and contributions to the field, Kim was honored as the Colorado Substance Abuse Counselor of the Year by SACC in 2009. He holds certification from the American Association of Sex Addiction Therapists, having received training and certification under the mentorship of Dr. Doug Weiss, a renowned pioneer in sexual addiction treatment and the Executive Director of Heart to Heart Counseling in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In addition to his expertise in addiction treatment, Kim Nuzzo is a highly respected artist and actor. As the associate director of Zephyr Stage (ZS), Kim plays a pivotal role in producing original plays that have garnered acclaim at prestigious Fringe festivals in Edinburgh and Denver. His creative talents and passion for storytelling infuse each production with depth and authenticity, captivating audiences and earning critical acclaim. Kim’s artistic pursuits not only enrich his own life but also contribute to the cultural landscape, demonstrating his commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in both the addiction treatment field and the arts community. With his wealth of experience and commitment to empowering clients on their journey to recovery, Kim Nuzzo is a valuable asset to the Jaywalker team.
Lenny has spent the past 28 years promoting the personal and academic development of adolescents and adults from varied backgrounds in clinical, wilderness, and urban settings. Over these years, he has developed professional, administrative, and managerial skills in the Outdoor Adventure, Clinical Substance Abuse Treatment, and Education fields. Lenny began his clinical work in alcohol and substance abuse counseling in 1983 at Beech Hill Hospital in Dublin, NH. During his 9 years at Beech Hill Hospital, he was instrumental in the development and implementation of an innovative adolescent wilderness treatment program as part of a joint venture with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.
Lenny eventually rose to Clinical Director of the Beech Hill/Outward Bound program before leaving in 1992 to direct intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs for adults in Rutland and Brattleboro, Vermont. Lenny moved to New York City in 1994 to direct the New York City Outward Bound Center’s adventure education programs. He spent 10 years working to improve the academic skills of NYC’s public school students by developing and overseeing exciting and innovative literacy programs for students and training programs for teachers. Since moving to Colorado in 2004 Lenny has continued to focus on serving the community, and in May 2009 joined the staff at Storm King Case Management in Glenwood Springs, Colorado as a Clinical Case Manager–a position he continues to hold on a part-time, as-needed basis.
Lenny spent a year at Aspen Counseling Center, from July 2010 to July 2011, providing all the DUI education and therapy for the upper Roaring Fork Valley. In July 2011, Lenny joined Jaywalker as a consultant. Lenny also maintains a limited private practice working with substance abuse and addiction clients. Lenny received his master’s degree in education in 1988 from Cambridge College. He received his CAC III certification in Colorado in March 2010. Lenny lives in Carbondale, Colorado with his wife Lara and their four cats.
Alex brings a unique blend of expertise and personal experience to his role as a counselor at Jaywalker Lodge, specializing in co-occurring disorders and drawing from his background in philosophy and artistic expression.
With a Counseling Masters focused on co-occurring disorders, Alex is dedicated to helping clients identify and integrate the root causes of their emotional and behavioral patterns. His additional Masters in philosophy enriches his therapeutic approach, allowing him to explore existential issues and concerns with clients in a meaningful way.
Alex’s work in various artistic media adds another dimension to his counseling practice, inspiring creativity and self-expression in his work with clients. He is passionate about helping the men at Jaywalker expand their inner horizons and outer possibilities, guiding them on a journey of self-discovery and growth.
As someone on his own journey of recovery, Alex brings a deep sense of empathy and understanding to his work with clients. Prior to joining Jaywalker, he worked with diverse populations and demographics, gaining valuable experience in supporting individuals on their paths to healing.
Outside of his professional role, Alex enjoys skiing and sailing, finding joy and fulfillment in these outdoor pursuits. His passion for skiing has earned him the playful nickname “the human avalanche” among clients, highlighting his enthusiasm for the sport. In the summer months, he indulges his love for sailing by participating in regattas across the Midwest.

Lauri plays a pivotal role as the Director of Insurance Relations and Billing at Jaywalker, leveraging over a decade of experience in the insurance field to ensure that families can access quality care without the burden of financial stress. With the increasing reliance on private insurance for healthcare coverage, Lauri’s expertise is invaluable in navigating the complexities of insurance reimbursement.
Lauri works closely with each family to maximize reimbursement from insurance carriers, advocating tirelessly on their behalf. She collaborates closely with the clinical team at Jaywalker to ensure that all necessary charting and documentation are in place for insurance billing purposes, striving to streamline the process and leave no insurance claim unresolved.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Lauri calls Estes Park, Colorado, home, where she enjoys the breathtaking beauty of the area through hiking and bike riding. A passionate traveler, Lauri has explored all 50 states and Africa, with plans to visit Asia next. Additionally, Lauri is a devoted fan of the Broncos, adding a touch of sports enthusiasm to her diverse interests.

Bob, currently serving as the Alumni Coordinator at Jaywalker Lodge, hails originally from Kansas but has called Colorado home for the majority of his life. Raised in a supportive household alongside his parents and two older brothers, Bob’s formative years were filled with a passion for sports, particularly soccer and golf, as well as a deep appreciation for outdoor adventures such as hiking, backpacking, camping, and snowboarding.
Despite a promising start, Bob’s journey took a challenging turn during high school when he grappled with alcohol and substance abuse, leading to a prolonged battle with addiction that persisted from the age of seventeen to thirty-four. Throughout this tumultuous period, Bob found himself in and out of treatment centers, with intermittent periods of sobriety in between.
In December 2016, Bob’s parents discovered Jaywalker Lodge, a turning point in his life. Completing every stage of the program, Bob emerged transformed and dedicated to maintaining his newfound sobriety. Since then, he has embraced life to the fullest.
In 2023, Bob married his soulmate, and the following year, they joyously welcomed their daughter into the world. Today, Bob’s journey serves as an inspiration to others, and in his role as the Alumni Coordinator, he remains committed to supporting individuals on their path to recovery with empathy, understanding, and firsthand experience.
Geoff Shea brings a wealth of personal experience and a deep commitment to serving others to his role as the Admissions Coordinator at Jaywalker Lodge. A man in long-term recovery, Geoff is a continuous learner with a passion for giving back to others. His journey in recovery has equipped him with invaluable insights and a genuine empathy for those seeking help.
Geoff’s professional background spans various roles in the behavioral healthcare field, including recovery coach, case manager, and business development at organizations across the East Coast. He is a certified recovery coach, with notable positions such as Recovery House Manager at Nexus House and Recovery Advisor at Aware Recovery in Connecticut. Prior to his involvement in the behavioral healthcare field, Geoff worked in institutional sales for esteemed firms such as Lehman Brothers, Paine Webber, and UBS.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Geoff is an active lover of the outdoors, embracing all aspects of mountain lifestyle through activities such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and more. Rachel Miller Nold serves as the National Director of Clinical Outreach for Jaywalker. Graduating summa cum laude from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and Mass Communication, Rachel initially embarked on a career in finance, working with wealth management advisors and family offices in Dallas, Texas.
In 2020, Rachel made a significant career transition into the field of behavioral healthcare, joining a prominent organization as a Senior National Clinical Outreach. In this role, she served as a crucial liaison between facilities nationwide and referring professionals, forging authentic relationships and connecting individuals with the care they needed.
Driven by her passion and mission to assist others on their journey towards recovery, Rachel places a high value on authentic relationships and genuine connection. Her own personal journey in sobriety serves as a powerful motivator, fueling her drive to help others find their own path to freedom and recovery.

With a background deeply rooted in outdoor adventure and safety, Craig brings over two decades of experience as a ski patroller and eighteen years as a mountain bike patroller to our team. His expertise and dedication to outdoor pursuits make him a valuable asset in creating meaningful and enjoyable experiences for our clients.
Originally hailing from the Roaring Fork Valley, Craig has been an integral part of our community since 2001. After embarking on his own journey to sobriety in April 2005, he became an active member of the recovery community, offering support, guidance, and hope to others on their paths to recovery.
Outside of work, Craig finds joy in spending time with his wife and daughter, cherishing every moment they share together. An avid enthusiast of all things outdoors, he can often be found exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Roaring Fork Valley, whether skiing down the slopes or hitting the mountain bike trails.
Craig’s passion for adventure, coupled with his commitment to recovery, makes him a perfect fit for our activities team. We’re thrilled to have him on board, and we look forward to the positive impact he will make in the lives of our clients.
Rob has been an integral part of the Jaywalker activities team since 2020, bringing a wealth of experience and a kind nature to his role. Originally from near Indianapolis, Indiana, Rob grew up in a very active family, participating in various sports such as distance running and wrestling during his youth.
As a valuable asset to the Jaywalker team, Rob’s clients appreciate his competitive spirit and calm demeanor during daily activities. Whether shooting hoops, playing pickleball, climbing, biking, or hiking, Rob’s presence enhances the experience for everyone involved.
In 2014, Rob made the move to the picturesque Roaring Fork Valley, where he now resides in Glenwood Springs with his wife and daughter. Embracing the outdoor lifestyle of the area, Rob enjoys activities such as rock climbing, skiing, camping, and hiking 14ers, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the natural beauty of Colorado.

Nick Said has a natural love for recreation that he brings to his role as Activities Assistant at Jaywalker. Originally from Connecticut, Nick’s journey led him to Denver after college, where he discovered Jaywalker as a client in February of 2020. Inspired by his own recovery journey, Nick transitioned into a role at Jaywalker in May of 2021, eager to give back to the community that had supported him.
As Activities Assistant, Nick has the privilege of sharing his lifelong passions with the clients at Jaywalker. From skiing and hiking, activities he has enjoyed since childhood, to leading new adventures such as mountain biking and pickleball, Nick strives to create meaningful experiences that promote recreation and sobriety.
Nick’s goal every day is simple yet powerful: to teach the clients how to laugh and recreate sober. He believes that fostering a sense of joy and camaraderie through recreational activities lays the foundation for long-lasting sobriety. By sharing his own journey and leading by example, Nick inspires hope and resilience in those he serves at Jaywalker Lodge.
George’s journey to long-term recovery began in August 2011, marking a transformative milestone in his life. Since then, he has embraced a life of sobriety and wellness, inspiring others with his resilience and determination.
When he’s not cheering on his favorite sports teams, George can be found pursuing his other great loves: biking and skiing. His enthusiasm for outdoor activities knows no bounds, and he thrives on the adrenaline rush of mountain sports.
With a background deeply rooted in ski mountaineering and outdoor recreation, George brings a wealth of experience to the Jaywalker team. He spent years as the managing partner of a private consultancy, honing his leadership skills and navigating numerous physical rehabilitations along the way.
In 2016 (or possibly 8 years ago), George joined the Jaywalker team, bringing with him 35 years of coaching experience in mountain sports. From the rugged terrain of the Chugach to the majestic peaks of the Andes and Alps, George has coached athletes in some of the most iconic mountain ranges around the world.
Today, George resides in Basalt with his wife Anita, soaking in the beauty of the Roaring Fork Valley. His passion for adventure, coupled with his dedication to recovery, makes him an invaluable member of the Jaywalker team. We’re grateful to have George on board, guiding and inspiring others on their journey to recovery and wellness.
Denise brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role as the Wellness Director at Jaywalker where she is dedicated to promoting health, wellness, and personal growth among our clients. With an extensive background in health, wellness, and fitness, Denise has been a local resident of the Roaring Fork Valley since 1999.
In her role, Denise is responsible for curating unparalleled indoor and outdoor experiences for our clients, designing and implementing daily activities and monthly expeditions with her team. Her approach is centered around building a strong foundation for optimal growth, and her inspiring instruction is rooted in a deep-seated passion for helping clients unlock their full potential.
Denise is a certified Health & Life Coach through the Health Coach Institute and holds certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Personal Trainer and Golf Fitness Specialist. With over twenty years of experience in the field, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her work. Additionally, Denise holds numerous health and fitness certifications, including Nutritional and Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Professionals, Therapeutic Nature-Based Interventions, and Wilderness First Aid.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Denise resides in Basalt with her husband Michael, their two daughters, and two dogs. She enjoys an active lifestyle, embracing activities such as hiking, mountain biking, skiing, golfing, paddleboarding, and gardening. An avid cook and fitness enthusiast, Denise also finds fulfillment in teaching group fitness classes and sharing her passion for health and wellness with others.
Lindsay Pfaffmann is a valued member of the Jaywalker team, serving as our Bookkeeper since 2021. With a background in administrative and fundraising roles within non-profits and schools in the Roaring Fork Valley, Lindsay brings a wealth of experience to her position, ensuring that our books are meticulously maintained behind the scenes.
Originally from Leawood, Kansas, Lindsay pursued her passion for sociology at the University of Kansas, where she earned her BA degree. In 2001, she made the move to Aspen, Colorado, where she found her home and started a family. Lindsay is the proud mother of three active boys, Mason, Bo, and Wylder, and is happily married to Garry, a dedicated middle school teacher.
Outside of her professional duties, Lindsay enjoys indulging in various outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and camping, embracing the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. She also finds joy in the kitchen, cooking and baking delicious meals for her family. Above all, Lindsay treasures spending quality time with her loved ones, cherishing every moment shared together.

Todd brings a wealth of personal experience and passion to his role as the Outpatient Sober Living Program Supervisor at Jaywalker. Raised in the vibrant community of Alameda, CA, Todd enjoyed a happy upbringing with his loving parents, older brother, and younger sister. After earning his B.A. in history and philosophy from Colby College in 2010, Todd found himself grappling with the challenges of addiction and depression.
Despite his struggles, Todd’s journey led him to Jaywalker Lodge in January 2021, where he completed the Lodge, Solutions, and Sober Living portions of the program. Through dedication and the unwavering support of his family, Todd rediscovered his self-worth and developed a newfound passion for helping others navigate their own paths to recovery.
Joining the Jaywalker staff in December 2021, Todd has served as Sober Living Coordinator since November 2022, leveraging his personal experiences to guide and support individuals on their journey toward sobriety. In September 2023, he will embark on a new chapter of his professional journey by pursuing a Master of Social Work at the University of Denver – Western Colorado MSW program, further solidifying his commitment to assisting individuals struggling with addiction.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Todd remains an active member of the recovery community, finding solace and strength through skiing and outdoor activities. With a steadfast dedication to helping others and a deep-rooted passion for recovery, Todd continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those he serves at Jaywalker and beyond.
Stephen Hout, our dedicated Transition Living Program Supervisor, brings a unique blend of creativity, compassion, and personal resilience to his role at Jaywalker Lodge. Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Stephen’s upbringing was shaped by his love for expressive arts, including marching band and various forms of artistic expression that allowed him to find freedom in creativity.
After facing the devastating loss of his parents and experiencing a steep decline, Stephen found solace and support at Jaywalker, where he embarked on his own journey of recovery in 2018. Since then, Stephen has not only found a new sense of family among his peers but has also discovered a profound sense of freedom within the vibrant recovery community of Carbondale.
Outside of his work, Stephen finds joy in skiing and maintaining his physical fitness, activities that not only nourish his body but also provide opportunities for personal growth and self-expression. However, Stephen’s greatest passion lies in giving back to others, particularly those who have faced struggles similar to his own.
